Jag har börjat följa ett par engelskspråkiga bloggar om skrivande, och hittade hos Miss Snark en formel(!) för hur man skriver en hook (finns det ett bättre svenskt uttryck för ‘hook’? Kommer inte på något):

X is the main guy; Y is the bad guy; they meet at Z and all L breaks loose. If they don’t solve Q, then R starts and if they do it’s L squared.

Once you have the form down you can give it your own distinct style.

Think of your opening scene as the catalyst that triggers the chain of events in your story. Your first page starts the ball rolling. The best books grab the reader from the very first sentence and never let go.

Begin your novel by showing a character with a problem doing something interesting. On page one, your main protagonist should be acting in a way that both characterizes him/her and sets the plot in motion. Your opening can be anything from a cowboy in a gunfight to a girl being followed on a dark London street. It can be a character cooking dinner or committing murder.

Apropå min inledande mening, som innehöll uttrycket “ett par”, så har jag haft en debatt med vänner och bekanta (och inte minst min sambo) om hur många “ett par” egentligen åsyftar. För mig är det solklart - två. Men begreppet tolkas olika. Ungefär hälften av de jag frågat säger detsamma som jag, den andra hälften menar att “ett par” snarare är synonymt med “några” eller “ett fåtal”.

Det är väldigt förvirrande. Och Nationalencyklopedin ger båda tolkningarna rätt.
