by Anna Kavan Ice is set in a future world headed for destruction. A new ice age is aproacing, and as the walls of ice are closing in humans return to the most primitive of instincts - to do anything to survive. It is a tale full of blood and violence, depravity and sin, but also of love and obsession. The hero, or almost antihero, of the book is obsessed with a woman who doesn't trust him, who keep running away from him into more and more destructive relationships and actions. His quest for this woman, whom he sees in dreams and hallucinations where she is the constant victim, is depicted in a very surreal way. Reality and hallucinations, present and past, are all interwoven til they almost lose their meaning. I have no intention of trying to explain the magic of this book. Read it and you will be taken on a very interesting, beautiful and horrific journey. |
